Southenergy and SOUxOstuni: The magical world of energy

“When people ask me what I do, I say that I am a magician, because when you activate a photovoltaic system and energy is generated, that is magic.” The words of Giovanni Melpignano, CEO of Southenergy, are entirely representative of the spirit and enthusiasm of the company that, for 15 years, has been working with increasing commitment and dedication in the field of renewable energy and energy sustainability. A company spirit that characterises not only its business-related activities but also its daily dynamics. And this is precisely the fertile ground behind the collaboration with SOUxOstuni, the school of architecture for children. The school, promoted in the local area by the Officine Tamborrino – Scaffsystem, specialises in after-school educational activities related to urban planning, architecture and the environment, art, design and community building. A valuable multidisciplinary educational project that brings together architects, urban planners, landscape architects, botanists, artists, sociologists and professionals to educate on the value of culture and good cultural, environmental and civic practices. A journey to discover energy and the wonderful world of renewable sources Fitting perfectly with the educational journey of SOUxOstuni’s youth is the question of energy, at 360°. What is energy, how valuable is it to all of us, through which daily actions can we benefit from energy? But more importantly, how can we educate younger generations on the conscious production and use of energy and the due respect that our planet deserves? An initiative designed to introduce, in a creative and engaging way, fundamental notions such as energy and renewable sources, stimulating the imagination and curiosity of the young. The course, led by the Southenergy team, saw SOUxOstuni students engaged in three educational macro-moments:
  • The educational theory module: energy and renewable energy sources, theory and practical applications;
  • The playful-learning module: workshop aimed at building a sustainable housing structure;
  • The creative module: energy, represented by children
The course has emphasised the crucial role played by younger generations in existing energy transitions, inspiring children to learn the importance of environmental sustainability through an educational and stimulating experience. A hands-on approach that, by projecting complex theoretical notions onto concrete examples, made sustainable and respectful daily practices evident.
